Week 10 of Web 2.0
Wrap-up
This has definately been an interesting 10 weeks!
I am grateful for having the opportunity to complete the Web 2.0 course, although I did find it time consuming. Most weeks took between 1 and 2 hours, so the majority of it was done at home, as seems to be the case with most of the Mandurah Library staff.
I have learnt alot about this amazing technology and although I may not get to use it all on a personal basis, working in a public library I do see the necessity to "keep up with whats out there".
Thank you to City of Swan Libraries!
Geocaching
This is also very new to me and I agree with weescotslady that it is a great way to get us away from the computer and out into the fresh air. It would be a fun and interesting activity for families to spend quality time together at weekends and during holidays.
I am not sure how this could be introduced at the Library, but perhaps it could be used by the City to promote tourism in Mandurah.

PODCASTING
Week 9 of Web 2.0
This is very new to me and what a great idea.
I think this could be widely used in the Library, e.g for customers to be able to access author talks that they were unable to attend in person and for customers who prefer audio or rely on it due to poor eyesight.
I listened to the ABC local conversations with Richard Fidler podcast of three driving instructors sharing stories of their frustrations, fear and satisfaction of teaching people to drive. Having teenagers myself going through the driving stages, I can relate to some of their fears and frustrations!

Online video
Week 8 of Web 2.0
YouTube
Now this is a part of the course that I am familiar with, so found this week easy to follow. It is great to be able to upload video clips of your own personal choice and I think we could definately use YouTube in the Library, on our website to promote events that we hold, such as author talks and activities like storytime.
There is so much to look at and choose from when searching YouTube. I typed in Library and found this clip of Mr Bean in the Library, which I find quite funny but hope that none of our books ever get treated like this!

TWITTER
Have set up a Twitter account, done my first tweet and have "played around". Not sure if this is for me though and think I would rather stick to texting!
I can see the benefit of tweeting as a means of communication in that it is so instant and it is oviously popular as the latest figures show there are around 140 million tweets a day! Following the earthquake in Christchurch, whilst listening to 92.9 on my way home from work one night, I heard that a man in America contacted his sister in Auckland, who put out a tweet and a random person was able to go to the fathers address and confirm that he was safe. How wonderful is this technology!
Again I think that it would be great for travellers to be able to access Twitter at the Library to report on their adventures and movements and it would be beneficial for getting information out to customers quickly, e.g to advise of early closure.

Facebook and Twitter
Week 7 of Web 2.0
FACEBOOK
I have now set up a facebook account for the purposes of completing this Web 2.0 course.
I personally have mixed feelings about Facebook and am hearing alot of negativity about it. On the Sunrise morning show it recently mentioned that Australia is appointing a representive to deal with cyber bullying and complaints, as we don't currently have one, whereas other countries do. Considering there are over 11 million Facebook users in Australia, its unbelievable that this is only happening now! It mentioned that there was a security error which exposed private information and this only highlights the fact not to give out all your private details. Also there are a tiny minority of users who abuse it by posting unkind comments and criticisms, which was the case during a recent Bonds baby competion where young tots and babies were criticised by other mothers!
On a positive note, I do see the benefit of Facebook as a means of communication, especially in times of disaster such as the tsunami in Japan. It would definately be widely used by library members and visiters, especially travellers who need to keep in touch with family and friends back home.

Back to week 6!
I have set up my Delicious account but am not sure how to put a link to it in my blog, so will have to go back to that.
I can definately see the benefit of this social bookmarking site and the way in which bookmarks can be organised by tags. I think it would be very useful in the library, especially for students as it is a public site and bookmarked information can be accessed and shared, rather than having to do endless searching on the net.
LibraryThing
What a great idea to be able to create an online catologue of your own personal book collection. Its a great way to keep a record of the books you have read as well as the ones you would like to read. Reading other book lovers reviews beforehand would be of benefit when deciding to choose a particular title or try a new author. I think this would definately be great for bookclubs.
Back to Delicious and this is the link to my account.

Tagging, Delicious & LibraryThing
Week 6 of Web 2.0
I am really frustrated at the moment as I want to move on with the course, but my computer is so slow and taking forever to load and play "social bookmarking in plain english", so I am giving up for now!
Will have to try again later, hopefully, or in a day or so!

Wikis
Week 5 of Web 2.0
I can definately see the benefit of wikis, as shown in the "wikis in plain english clip", rather than emailing backwards and forward. I think it would be great for the library when organising events and everyones imput is needed for suggestions and ideas.
I found posting a comment on wetpaint confusing! I couldn't find the "easy edit" button, but tried to add a comment by starting a new thread, as I saw the thread posted by " wellidclare". When I tried to post my comment it just sat there and sat there....I even made a coffee and snack and it still hadn't posted! I tried again and then realised I had been disconnected from my wireless connection, so third time lucky, I managed to post it! I then found "easy edit" after posting the comment and navigating on the Learning 2.0 Basics wiki page! Anyway, my comment was still there as a thread (and hopefully still is) and as I have spent over 2 hours on this, I decided to stop and write up this blog.

RSS Feeds
Week 4 of Web 2.0
I have noticed the RSS feeds symbol when checking my emails in Outlook and now know that it stands for Real Simple Syndication.
I think it is a good idea that you can select from websites of interest and have the latest information and news sent directly to you, rather than having to go searching for it, although you could receive an overload of information to search through.
The Library could perhaps subscribe to the popular authors that have visited us and we would like to have visit again, to keep us informed of their news and latest publications and release dates.
I couldn't seem to subscribe to the West Australian or a local paper from my home town but did sucessfully add the RSS feed for the Learning 2.0 Basics training, as requested, together with unshelved, weescotslady and wellidclare blogspots and the sammyandbella website, having just been hooked on the latest Your Kitchen Rules TV show!

FLICKR
Week 3 of Web 2.0.
I enjoyed checking out Flickr and this is definately a great website for storing photos of your precious memories and a site that I would use (something for me to do on a rainy day!).
I think it would be a great site for the library to use, for example to show the construction stages of the new Lakelands Library when building commences and for displaying photos of all the wonderful library events we hold, as well as the community events, such as the Crab Fest.
I decided to post this copy photo of the fireworks taken at the Perth Sky Show. I think it is always a great event for families and friends to spend time together and the City of Perth always puts so much time and effort into it, for so many people of all ages to get so much enjoyment out of.

Well....this is it. The new and exciting world of blogging! And it is all very new to me!
I am not really into social networking but I know that I do need to keep up in this ever changing world of technology.
I am hoping that over the next few weeks of this course, the knowledge gained will enable me to assist the growing number of library customers who use our computers in a more helpful and efficient way and that I have some fun on this learning journey.
