Week 7 of Web 2.0
FACEBOOK
I have now set up a facebook account for the purposes of completing this Web 2.0 course.
I personally have mixed feelings about Facebook and am hearing alot of negativity about it. On the Sunrise morning show it recently mentioned that Australia is appointing a representive to deal with cyber bullying and complaints, as we don't currently have one, whereas other countries do. Considering there are over 11 million Facebook users in Australia, its unbelievable that this is only happening now! It mentioned that there was a security error which exposed private information and this only highlights the fact not to give out all your private details. Also there are a tiny minority of users who abuse it by posting unkind comments and criticisms, which was the case during a recent Bonds baby competion where young tots and babies were criticised by other mothers!
On a positive note, I do see the benefit of Facebook as a means of communication, especially in times of disaster such as the tsunami in Japan. It would definately be widely used by library members and visiters, especially travellers who need to keep in touch with family and friends back home.
I've also heard a lot about cyber bullying on Fb. I hope that there will be more initiatives to educate people on "netiquette" and on what can be done if you're being cyberbullied/stalked.
